computer woes

I still have a sore throat. I ended up not going to work due to it.

What was sort of funny is that my new computer showed up today, but I was completely asleep and out of it due to feeling sick, so it arrived and I was just like "ugh". I didn't actually get the computer out and set it up until about 10pm. I had to clean up the computer area anyway -- took out the boards from my table and vaccuumed the floor and everything.

And now I'm posting from the new computer. It seems good so far. It's quiet. The monitor is flat-screen, which is exceptionally neat to me.

Um, but, what is bad is -- so I moved the old computer over into the living room so I'd have room to set up the new computer -- and when I tried to turn on the old computer, I got a blue screen with "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME". Ugh. I don't feel like futzing with it now, so I guess tomorrow I'll have to figure out something, maybe take out the hard drive and try to hook it up to the new computer directly. Ugh ugh ugh. It'll really suck if I can't get the stuff off my old computer. I'd fortunately backed up some of my stuff to a flash media keychain card, but that was a couple of weeks ago, too. I didn't think moving the computer 15 feet would break it.

Zach came over for a little while in the evening and hung out for a bit, and I gulped down some DayQuil and we went to Blue C to get dinner with Chris, since I needed to talk to him about Vegas stuff, and I could show off Blue C to Zach.

There are two possibilities with the old hard drive: Either it got a virus, or the hard drive itself is dying. I have a disk recovery program that I bought a couple years ago for preventative maintanence. It might come in handy in this situation, but be warned it can take several hours, especially if it runs into problems on the drive.

Got a virus or dying... okay, but still, why would it work one minute just fine, then I shut down the computer and carry it 15 feet over and turn it on again and it's broken?

Do you think it'll work if I open up my new computer and try to load my old hard drive as a slave and copy off the files?

It's unlikely to cause any damage to the drive to do that. Would probably be a good thing to check (though definitely make sure you have a virus scanner active in case that was the cause).

i got McAfee with my new computer. yeehaw. hopefully that's good enough.

I guess I should go look up more what "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" really means, though.

Hmm. Did you happen to check the harddrive cable? Is it a multiple-harddrive box and one of the cables just came unseated? (That's about the only thing I can think of going wrong if you just moved it 15 feet).
