Actually, I guess I don't have that much to say about today.
I worked almost all day, really.
I took off from 5:30pm-7 to go to Tessaro's with way too many people (Alex was dictator, and we had Kevin, Eli, Norm, Mahim, Shafeeq, Elissa, Dave M, Bumba, and me) there. I had a big burger. I hadn't eaten lunch. It was pretty good. Bizarre conversation, but what else is new.

I stayed until 11:30pm because I really wanted to get my web stuff up. Basically, I forget if I've mentioned this, but I started a movement to organize our internal web server so people can check out the pages in CVS and it doesn't take 3 hours. This was a problem because people kept checking things like Powerpoint presentations into our web site. In the past week or two I've written tons of scripts to move files of certain file types (you know, mp3, ppt, png, doc, pdf, ps, exe, war) and over a certain size (100k) to a new non-version-controlled "binary file server". So my scripts so far have copied the files over to the new server, and updated around 90% of the links to those files. When I get the other 10% done (mostly cases in which the links were either broken or stupid in the first place), tomorrow I will run another script I've written which will remove all of the offending files from CVS, and then I will send out my guideline on putting large files on the web site. The cool thing is I've reduced the size of our internal web site (at least measuring my local copy of everything) from like 850MB to like 50MB. I'm hoping this will mean people in Utah will finally stop complaining that they can't edit the website because CVS is so slow for them, and won't create too much work for people. The script I'll be working on next will scan for offending files in the intranet and also look for broken links, and it will be so simple that anyone can run it. It will be way cool. I am a 1337 \/\/3b g0dd355.

(actually, I do feel pretty cool about this, and I think other people will be really happy about it - I am hoping I can use the success of this to con people into letting me do some other Perl work... and not have to do release notes... but that may be pushing my luck.)

I wish I could get hired somewhere to do stuff like this full-time. This is what I'm really good at, along with XML/XSL and random Java hacking. The problem is I don't know anything about web database hacking. If I could learn that, I could probably bill myself as a webmaster.

Tom Pierce wanted me to edit some stuff for him, but since I was there until 11 I apologized and promised to read it tomorrow. He's ok with that - it's not urgent. And he's cool, so I don't mind doing stuff for him.

I guess around 5pm I ran over to Phantom to get a copy of OA for Carl, except that they were all out of it. That was sad. I hope they get more copies in soon.

Fred seems to think they have a DDR machine at D&B in addition to PIU. I need to get over there to check it out sometime. Any takers?

You could probably pick it up pretty easily. Yishan did that, when he was writing the forum. He used MySQL. It's. is free, and I guess, not too complicated. It would probably just take a bit of discipline and a little bit of time.

mySQL

Several years ago I had to set up and administer a web-based mySQL DB, and I didn't really know anything about databases or SQL, and it didn't take me that long to figure it out. You'd pick it up pretty quickly, I think.

Web database hacking is all I've been doing for months.
CGI.pm and DBI.pm are your friends.
Learning the SQL part isn't too bad at all.
It's *almost* english: SELECT {columns} FROM {table} WHERE login = 'dr4b'
