I really should move my stuff off Roman's computer -- he's been really gracious in letting me use it for dr4b.org for the last few years, but I think the machine is dying, and my hosting stuff there isn't really helping.

Does anyone have any recommendations for webhosting places? I really just want something similar where I have a shell account, can edit and upload stuff as if I were back in college, and can see the weblogs. zqfmbg, do you still do that? I forget.

Yep, still do. It's pretty barebones, but I do have vhosts going, and if I can remember how the hell I did it, virtual domain e-mail. I've a few projects that are repeatedly being put off to set up some other things, but if all you want is ssh/sftp and a directory to plunk everything into, I can provide that.

I don't know what you need, but I highly reccomend Media Temple. People rave about DreamHost too.

I use Dreamhost - aside from not being able to assign multiple FTP users to a single domain, they've been great. They have pretty much been constantly increasing their bandwidth and disk quotas for existing customers on a weekly basis, which is pretty cool. How much are you looking to pay a month?

I'll vouch for Lunarpages, my current host. No shell access, but tons of space and nice web log interfaces (Analog, Webalizer, or you can download the raw logs). They also make a lot of free PHP/Perl packages available to subscribers.

I use Dreamhost and have for a long time. I'm satisfied most of the time and they are really cheap and do offer lots of stuff. Lemme know if you have any particular questions about them. (And hey, if you sign up via my link, I get a % of any money you spend there).

If you just need basic hosting and dont expect too much in terms of traffic, i can set you up with space on my server.
Can't guarentee any uptimes/backups/etc, but considering i'm running my own web page/email/etc off of it, I do my best to keep it up and running.
It runs off my DSL connection at home (3mbit/1mbit) on a MacOS 10.4 server on a Mac Mini.

Our needs may be different (I don't have a domain name but heavily use the shell account and web space), but JTAN has been good for me. If you use that link to sign up I think I get $5, but I'd recommend them even without that and so will also provide the generic link.
