I'm home, or something

I am safe, (mostly) sound, and back in Seattle.

Carl walked me to campus and helped me carry my junk and we got ToI for lunch.

I met with Mark Stehlik for my undergraduate advising slot. Well, not exactly.

After that I hung out in the cslounge for about 15 minutes talking baseball with aleffert, dlstern, and Shawn.

Then I caught a 28x bus to the airport.

My flight from Pittsburgh to Philly took off 30 minutes late. As a result, I had about 20 minutes to get to my connecting flight. Fortunately, it was a tad delayed too.

On the Philly-Seattle flight, I was sitting behind a family with three screaming babies. For the love of god, this makes me really, really, really not want to have children. Six hours of screaming and crying is just not fun. I did finish reading a book and a half of stuff anyway.

Megan gave me a ride home from the airport. Yay for Megan.

Hmm, I still need to find someone to drag to the A's game tonight.

well, just bebcause you have children doesn't mean you have to take them on a plane...

The crying is not restricted to planes though. They'll cry just about anywhere (I hear em quite often in stores. THAT has to be embarassing :P).

I am thinking that perhaps parenting skills are at fault here. my neice, for example (who is 4 going on 5) doesn't pitch fits in stores, and if she's showing signs of it, it's nipped in the bud. :)

But, I think it's unfair to blame parents for kids who cry in public places. I almost never cried ever; my sister also was reasonable although she wailed in descending planes. It's not clear to me my parents had much to do with that: we were just quiet.

well, planes are a special case: many children don't know or can't clear their ears, so they are in pain for most or all of the flight. :(

I suppose by "crying" mostly what I mean are tantrums/attention getting manipulation. that >can be attributed to parenting, IMHO.

Speaking as a parent, sometimes our son is good, and sometimes he cries. Several factors are at play: the general temperament of the baby (as well as how the parents respond to it), whether the baby gets to nap on the flight, how hungry the baby is, diaper situation, and problems with the pressure. Smart parents try to set the baby up to feed on the way up, sleep through the flight, and feed on the way down. But it often doesn't work out that way.

So basically, it's one of those "if you're ever a parent, you'll understand". Parents find non-parents who give those irritated looks at the screaming baby to be immature, clueless, and very inconsiderate.

So yeah, you may decide you don't want kids, but that's a personal choice. Kids hopefully don't scream all the way until they're grown up--but we don't know that yet ourselves ;-) .

Yeah, I know I'm immature and inconsiderate, but on the other hand, I'm usually a pro at sleeping through flights, and if there's a whole bunch of children who are screaming constantly and loudly enough to keep me awake...

also, if I ever have kids, I'm not taking them on airplanes until they're old enough to understand the word "quiet" for real.

yeah, I generally chalk it up to "it's a baby, they do that. poor kid!"

If you ever have kids, and if both grandparents are not local, you'll have lots of reasons to take the kids on airplanes. We couldn't keep from taking Cade to see Leslie's family, and my parents were so desperate to see him that they paid for our Thanksgiving flights two years in a row. Lucky them, now we live only 2 miles away.

Could always drive instead. Though that depends on how long you want to take to get to your destination.
