goin' around seattle town with the fandamily

Today I spent the day hanging out with my brother and his wife.

They called me at like 10am, came over here at like 11:30 after they went to see the locks in Ballard. (They already did the Seattle Center yesterday.) We hung out here for a bit, then went to Gordito's for lunch. (My goal for food for the day was going to unique Seattle places, and they had to be vegetarian for my sister-in-law.) They liked Gordito's, though they didn't quite understand what I meant about the food portions until their food actually arrived :)

I showed them around Fremont a little afterwards -- we went to the troll, and walked around the main area, saw the Center of the Universe sign, the Rocket, etc. It was really warm out at that point. So we went to the Zoo after that since it was so nice out (and D&E really like zoos). Of course, two things happened -- 1) we showed up just slightly too late to see the tiger cubs 2) it started raining shortly after we got there. It rained a lot, which made the zoo less fun since less random animals were out wandering, and more were hiding under cover. Ah, well. I saw a lot of adorable turtles in the reptile building. One turtle was eating a rat. It was weird, a bit later we saw a sign by the big snakes saying "All animals that get fed to other animals are killed humanely first," which made me wonder if the rat was fed to the turtles or what. It make sense for the snakes (since it said like, "If you see a snake eating a bunny rabbit, don't worry" -- and snakes are notorious for slowly killing their prey). As governor of Turtle Island, I heartily endorse there being tons of adorable turtles at the zoo.

As an aside though, going to the zoo makes me feel bad for animals. They just look so boooored trapped there, even though I know they're being treated well. But if I was a cougar I'd rather be running and hunting, not pacing around in a huge cage.

After the zoo we dropped by Greenlake a bit so I could show it to them. We watched people row around... then we went downtown to go by Pioneer Square, and the Elliott Bay Book Company, since I figured that was a pretty good Seattle bookstore to show off. We stopped in the pioneer square Starbucks for hot drinks on the way. Whee.

They wanted Thai food for dinner, and I didn't feel like braving Queen Anne again, so we went to Sabai Sabai, since I remembered that from Sean's birthday and other occasions. Fortunately, I remembered it well, and D&E both really enjoyed the food there, they said it was really full of flavor, including the spices. I had pad-see-iew or whatever, and it was GREAT but overly spicy for me. Mmmm.

We came back here and debated what to do for the evening. Either watch a movie, or play a board game. We went for a board game, since Dan kept commenting on how many games I have around here. Since Em doesn't really play board games, I suggested playing either Settlers or Carcassonne. I figured Settlers because it's simple and a family game and Dan had played it before a few times when he visited me at CMU... or Carcassonne because it's a pretty decent game for gamers and non-gamers. Turns out I was right -- we played Carcassonne, and Danny won, but Emily really enjoyed the game anyway, and we played where everyone would turn up their tile and we'd suggest places to each other, but towards the end of the game even both of them would see a tile and go "aha, I see where I want to put this to either help me or deliberately screw over someone else". Which was good.

So, we folded out the couch bed after that, and they went to sleep, being all east-coast-time-like, and I've been in my room on my laptop, catching up on PP (I'm still split over whether to be overjoyed that Chern is back) and all my normal web browsing that I didn't do today since I was going all around town hanging out. It was a pretty good day though and fun to take them around the city. Shame they're leaving tomorrow afternoon already...

Many snakes won't eat dead prey; how do they get around that? But yeah, I'm not big on zoos. OTOH, what with our propensity to destroy all life on the planet, zoos do have their function.

I played Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers this weekend, and it was lots of fun. I think I'd like to try some of the others, but I just looked and there are about a million different versions of it.

WTF turtles eating rats??

Yes I find zoos depressing also.
