Stuff and D&D and stuff

Yesterday I had a pretty good day at work. I stayed until like 10pm -- I had to put together some files for a release. I ended up using up my Subway card points for a free foot-long sub for dinner, since I'm not sure how often I'll end up at Subway anymore. Arr.

Stopped by Sunset for one game of DDR. Wossname older woman I forget, she's got to be at least 40 (since I know she has a college-age son) but is blonde and built well so she looks like a teenager from the back, was there playing DDR too. I played like one game and my brain was just shot -- I did, and AA'ed, Higher Oni, BIMP, and White Lovers, with misses in every song. Yuck. Got Leading Cyber as an extra stage on random, and gave up 2/3 of the way through. I suck.

Sinlaeshel and I started a quest to go around the ocean and pick up all our stray money from random islands. We covered Sapphire last night with Dorien and Hatchetback and Nauta, and covered half of Coral tonight just the two of us. I'm back up to Ultimate in everything but Spades. Grrr.

Oh, and tonight I also had D&D. It was mostly a levelling/shopping session. We continued where we left off in the drow temple, and Cory snuck up and found the top of the spider thingy. We decided to go look in the spider head chamber, but triggered a magic trap. A big-ass demon spider appeared and smacked me for like 40 HP in one shot... and fortunately I beat its initiative after that and Dimension Doored us down to where Josh was with Mike's dead body, and we all teleported out. We got to level from 11 to 13 (since we hadn't come out of the dungeon for a bazillion sessions), which is exciting. I get 6th level spells now (since I'm 6 Wizard, 1 Fighter, 6 Eldritch Knight). It wasn't hard to pick out my two 6th level spells... I looked at the Evocation list and went "CHAIN LIGHTNING DUUUUDE" and then Disintegrate is an obvious second. Oooooh. As for my 5th level, I'm looking at Permanence and Wall of Force (to go with Teleport and Cone of Cold). Hey Carl, did you notice that in 3.5 they actually made a specific 5th-level wizard spell called "Baleful Polymorph"? I would have taken that and started turning opposing wizards into turtles, but I figured it really isn't this character's style.

Anyway, we all had like 15k to spend after cashing in our loot. I couldn't come up with anything to get except a Lesser Rod of Metamagic/Maximize for 14k. That'll be sweet though. I'll be able to cast maximized fireballs/lightningbolts three times a day without wasting extra spell slots. No rolling 10d6, just going "blammo! 60 points of damage to all of you! suckers!"

I should write about baseball one of these days but I've been too preoccupied. Whee.

Yes, baleful polymorph. Tis a toned down version of 3.0's Poly Other. They removed any beneficial effect (which I agree with) and increased the spell level. It really is just useful for making mages turtles.

They went a little far--I don't mind the size/type restrictions (since all I was using it for was making enemies into turtles anyway), but the chance of the victim losing their mind really decreases its use as a capture spell, so I never memorize it anymore.

Our party sorceror has one of these. It's pretty disturbing, really--last night he took out an efreeti by himself just by casting area cold spells.

Get a Ring of Protection +4?

Bah...spellcasting munchkins! You might as well just take every metamagic feat, and fill your entire spell list with Magic Missile.

You get 6th level spells, and didn't consider Guards and Wards? or Legend Lore? or heck, Contingency?!

I'm reminded of a party we had of a paladin, and three specialist wizards. We had, by the time we were using 3rd level spells, -1- Direct damage spell among us, not counting cantrips, and two of us actually picked Evocation is a forbidden school.

3 Mages and nobody even -knew- Magic Missile, or Melf's Acid Arrow

He really has the potential to become a mage killer. He's physically more capable than many mages and he knows or is planning on learning a bunch of the spells to take mages out (feeblemind is like next on his list).

Ahh, yes, now I remember the other reason why I wanted people in the party to know Limited Wish.
Unless I win the argument that Break Enchantment should have a chance to undo Feeblemind, then we might be okay with that. :)

Guards and Wards
This spell is often less than useful for the adventuring wizard, since it takes hours to cast and requires that you have a home base to actually cast it on.

Your description below certainly describes a mage version of Janthina.

When and where are the games?

I already had to drop a game so I could take the dance class. But if the timing and stuff works, then I'll consider it (as well as if it is offered).

Actually, the problem I saw with polymorph was: let's make the fighter an annis hag, the paladin into an angel, etc etc. I was in a party, which primarily used polymorph other in this fashion.

Hmm. In that case, I suggest purchasing a Ring of Counterspells, and finding a friendly NPC to cast Feeblemind into it.

Doesn't sound very likely. Wednesday is my current D&D game. And trips to the west side on a work night doesn't sound very good either. Thanks for the thought though.

I have other spells in my list that don't blow things up. Really. Like
Knock "remove the obstacle to blowing things up"
Web"You will continue to blow up for the next 1d4 rounds..."
Dispel Magic"Your energy protection spells offend me!"
Identify"Is this a wand of Lightning Bolt?"
Teleport/Dimension Door "Explosions delivery service. Arrives hot within 30 minutes, or your money back."

ROFL

Oh, good grief. I haven't had that good a laugh in ages.

Thank you! ^_^

I must say, Janthina is just about totally opposite of my mage, Doren... gnome illusionist (wiz 7, rogue 2), who has now started picking up Loremaster (got 1st in that a bit ago, near 2nd now -- so almost 11th level). He'd never even directly injured anyone until one session where we got backed into a corner, and he pulled (found) scrolls of cloudkill and then, later, transmute rock to mud... ended up directly killing hundreds of level 2/3 orc warriors, got by far the most kills of anyone in the group. And he had the psycological issues to go with it. ^_- (The fact that we were captured *anyway* did not help. Mind you, he was not the one who came away with the most issues, out of that....)

Obviously(?), evocation is his proscribed school.

Fun stuff... gotta love the different playing styles that are possible. ^_^
