christmas parties and stuff

Today there was a holiday party at Justin and Colleen's house. I ran over to Best Buy first to pick up a gift for their random-gift-swap thingy. I wanted to get the Doctor Demento Christmas CD, but didn't see it, so I ended up getting a Brian Setzer Orchestra christmas CD. I figured that I'd just pick out something that I personally wouldn't mind getting, that I figured people were unlikely to have.

There was some problem in the lot and some dude was getting his car towed. The tow truck was in a REALLY inconvenient place, like the middle of the up ramp from Best Buy. Sigh.

Got to the party a little before 6pm. The house was full of food, people, dogs, and small children. I guess there were like 6 couples there, plus a few other people, and I think four of the couples have kids? Ah well. I spent the first hour or two of the party being one of the guys, since I know nothing about childcare and all that fun stuff. So instead I watched Josh and Cory play pool, and then sat down with them and Dan and Justin and talked about videogames for a while. It sounds like most of the gang is going to play World of Warcraft at some point, which might almost convince me to play, but I'm not sure.

There was a gift giving thing where we all took gifts from the pile, opened them, and then for 10 minutes passed around boxtops with dice. You had to roll the dice, and if you got doubles, you HAD to swap gifts with someone else. A lot of swaps happened, but I think most people went home with stuff they were happy with. I ended up getting a Jon Stewart book which looks entertaining but I'm not sure when it'll work its way into my reading list, in the end.

We sat around for a bit reading trivia cards from "The 80's Game" which Colleen ended up getting, and then people headed home.

I will admit that I have been sitting on Puzzle Pirates for the last few hours since then. I led a pillage around Opal, which was entertaining, and then I worked on an art project for a while. Well, a Photoshop project. Well, an ad for my tailor on Endurance. Check it out:

I'm particularly proud of the Christmas Tree in the background. I was going to have a whole story about how [profile] chirik and I dug it out of the ground on Endurance, dragged it up the stairs to the tailor, and decorated it with cannonballs and powder and wads and stuff, but eh. It's still pretty silly :)

Puzzle Pirates *and* World of Warcraft? Two MMORPGs at once?

Hm ... looks like that'll probably book up the rest of your life for 2005.

It can be done! Albiet not well :P It helps to be established in one (pp) so you can give up some time there if you want.

it's hard enough for me to even make time for 1, and i'm unemployed! heh.
then again i don't get too into the MMO thing. my characters are only in the 14-30 level range. i have more fun making up new characters than i do playing the games...

I got that John Stewart book from my sister for my birthday. It is hilarious!

Oh what fun it is to ride in a '57 Chevrolet

Dude, that Brian Setzer CD rocks. It's Brian Setzer, and has my favorite holiday song on it (Sleigh Ride), so I can't go wrong.

D-- I played WoW in the beta, and I didn't really enjoy it from a content/design perspective. There was too much Everquest and not enough Warcraft, and in fact sometimes it felt weird to hear Warcraft voices coming out of these things in a fairly Everquest-like setting. Somehow, the MMORPG format has squelched a lot of the cuteness that the little teeny units had in earlier Warcrafts. Also, I had a real issue with the way PvP was handled, although they are looking into making that system better.

In any case, I will probably wait on playing it, or hopefully I will convince myself to skip it altogether.
