I AM THE GODDESS OF SUPER PUZZLE FIGHTER 2

Today was, as Adam declared it, Lounge Gaming Day. It was mostly fun.

As usual, after I showed Noble a cool game, he went out and bought it. I really ought to borrow games more often and convince him to buy them so I don't have to. So, he has Starfarers now, so we had two copies there. When I arrived, people were already playing. I was going to leave at 1:45 for a bit though, so we started a game of Tigris (we being me, Kevin, Jason, and Nick). I had to drop out but one of the KGB kids who was hanging out (not Fwiffo but the one with him who I haven't actually met) took over my stuff.

At 1:50 I went to the Giant Eagle Auditorium (yes, there really is such a thing, for the alums who don't come to campus enough) for an event held by the CMU Online Gaming Society. They were doing a Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Puzzle Fighter 2 free-for-all event, played on the huge projection screens and surround sound speakers in the auditorium. (SPF2 was supposed to be a tourney, but there wasn't enough interest.) Well, Justin Weisz, the OGS president, who I think is a really nice guy, had asked me to lend them SPF2 and show up a bit early. So I showed up early, but the room wasn't open yet, of course. Shrug. The new Geagle wing is really cool, actually.

They decided to do SSBM first. Because I was sitting in the front and helping setup, I got my hands on a gamecube controller to look at it, and then the game was loaded up around me. So I played a few rounds, but you know, I've never played any of the other smash bros. games, so mostly it'd be three people knowing what they were doing and me jumping around and hitting random combinations of keys and figuring out what they did. Shrug. I played as Pikachu though and it was reaaaaallly cute.

After watching SSBM for a while I decided that I wasn't going to play much more, so I gave my SPF2 game and controller to Darsen and went back to the lounge. I got there just in time to play Starfarers with Kevin, Brian R, and Nick. Nick won, although Brian decided this time to actually have a 6 and an 8 at the beginning and to try the strategy of setting up a spaceport out by the Scientists as early as possible. It almost worked - Brian had 13 points to Nick's winning 15...

Dan came by and we got Apples to Apples going. I added cards for the Tokyo Tower, for a Sony Playstation, and Gamers - "The store in Akihabara, or those freaks in the CS Lounge". The word "Magical" came up right after I drew "Harry Potter", so I put it in, but Noble was the judge, and really, it was the only good choice, but Noble is usually a pain in the ass when judging A2A and said "Oh, that's too obvious" and picked Infomercials instead.

So the OGS thing was from 2-6. At 5:45 I headed back to Baker to get my game and stuff, and they were just finishing up the Super Puzzle Fighter part of the event... so Justin was like "Hey, this is Deanna, she lent us the game. You want to get in on a round?" and I was like, "There's not a queue...?" "Nah, we're all but played out." So I picked up the second controller, and some other guy picked up the first. They were like "Are you good at this? He is really good. Don't let up on him." I said, "Then can I be Donovan?" I picked Donovan, he picked Ryu. (Ryu is my hardest char to defend against. Donovan is most people's hardest char to defend against. If I'm handicapping myself I play as Chun Li, but they said to go hard on this guy...) I was a little bit nervous, thinking "Damn, I was talking trash on the OGS bboard about how good I am, what if this guy whomps me?"

Well, it was exciting. The guy and I were actually really closely matched, and I wasn't even warmed up. But... I managed to beat him both games! (you usually do two out of three for a match), but each game took like 3 and a half minutes. (They usually take around a minute). [personal profile] oren has taught me well. Both of us were totally on it with timing breakers and playing really quickly... people kept gasping and saying stuff like "Holy shit, this is amazing" or "This is the longest match I've ever seen" or "Oh, you are so dead... oh my god, how did he clear that?" and such. It was pretty awesome. I was pretty humble about it afterwards actually - I was really impressed with this guy. So I was like, "Well, I own the game... of course I've played it a lot." (I realized later that in such a crowd they may have taken it as me saying "i 0wn3rz th15 g4m3", but, whatever) It's just, I sometimes get a major thrill out of being "that girl who will kick your ass at (insert video game title here)", especially after feeling so silly for not knowing Smash Bros. :) So, um, that deserves a w000000t! It's a shame it wasn't a tourney after all...

Came back to the lounge, caught up with dinner plans. We went to dinner at Del's. We originally had three contingents; ToI, Del's, and Tessaro's. I convinced everyone to go to Tessaro's and then it was CLOSED. GRRRRR. So Del's is a block away from T's and we went there. I had eggplant. We had 14 people in our group, but the energetic Del's manager lady found us a table waaaaaaay back in the smoking section (but no one was smoking). We were in groups of 8 and 6, but... it was still fun. Trey and Alisa and Alisa's brother and Zach and Rehana and Carl and Kevin were at my table. Whee.

Afterwards there was annoyance because I couldn't get into the game of bridge, and then they edged me out of playing Starfarers (well... we had 5 who wanted to play, and it only supports 4 with the basic set, and I had a second set in Doherty, so we thought there'd be a few more showing up to play, so they said to go get my set while they were explaining the rules to Trey, and we'd figure out who was playing after rules, but by the time I got back 3 minutes later they had already assigned colors to people and were setting stuff up. So I was sort of annoyed). I wanted to track down Drew Hoskins, but he was not to be found anywhere. So I gave up and came back. Carl and Andrew (alford) and I played Tigris. Andy beat us, but we had all 6 monuments out on the board. It was ridiculous. My minimum was 15 and Andrew's was 17. It was funny because he was saying how bad he was at it, and was going to be a buffer between Carl and I, but he ended up winning. Shrug.

Then I gave up on the idea of playing anything since it was 10:30pm, so Andrew offered me a ride home and I took it.

We never did play Mafia... I wonder if they played it after I left, now that I think about it.

Speaking of Mafia, I noticed that other acquaintances of mine from CMU have LJ accounts now too, and I am debating on whether to friends-ize them or just spy on them or what. (The Mafia connection is to Alisa, not the Alisa I had dinner with tonight but the one who started us on Mafia last year, in my infamous "Fuck you, Martin" game.) Spying is rude, but I don't entirely know what they think of me as a person, so maybe I will see what the tone of their journals are like before going into open stalk mode. Unless they find me first. :) Although, stalking other KGB people on here has worked out well so far... I think...

Holy. 4:20am. Eep. Suddenly that dumb Spin Doctors song pops into my head.. "What time is it?" "4:30!" "It's not late, naw, naw, it's early, early!" (Ben and Aiton and I used to sing that all the time in highschool because we are dorks.) So, uh, night. Yeah.
