I've never officially quit a job before today...

March 23, 2004

To whom it may concern:

I am writing this letter to announce my resignation from the position of Programmer Writer at Amazon.com, effective at the end of the day today, March 23, 2004.

While it has been a wonderful learning experience working here, I feel that my growth and productivity as a technical writer does not sync up with the current aims and objectives of the Technical Documentation and Training department. I wish them and the company all the best in the future.

Regrettably yours,

[scribbled signature]

Deanna Rubin

Oh, what's next? Good idea, I should tell y'all.

Well, I'm going to Japan with [profile] nykkel from March 31 - April 12. That was the "insanity" I talked about a few months ago.

Then I'm going to Spring Carnival. I'll be staying there as long as [profile] dvarin will let me :) Okay, not really. But I should be around for longer than just the Fri-Sat-Sun I'd originally thought was happening.

Then I'm going to Sakuracon, probably working for [profile] damienroc in guest relations, although we have to work out those details. I may also have a particular PP-celebrity houseguest for a couple days around then as well.

In the middle of May, I'm going to Philly for a week or two for my cousin's Bat Mitzvah, and to spend some significant time with my family for once and eat some cheesesteaks.

Infact, I'd like to do a lot of travelling while I have the time. So here's a proposal for you guys -- if I can find a plane ticket price that I can afford to where you are, and you will provide me crash space and drive me around, I will come visit you. At this rate, the sky's the limit, pun intended. Heck, I could even go to England or something :)

I plan to actually go look for a job sometime in June or July (hopefully [profile] tanuwa will still be a recruiter then, heh). Yes, I've saved up enough money that I'll be okay for a couple months, I'll just have to actually budget myself a little better.

Wow. Do you have another gig lined up? Or some money, at least?

Going to Disneyland now?

[identity profile] soiwas.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah ... fill us in on the obvious question ... what's next?!

[identity profile] wandelrust.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds like you think this is what was best, and kudos for having the balls to do it without having something else lined up yet.

I'd offer you crash space, but there isn't a whole lot of room at the B Street house, and I don't know how much longer I'll be there anyways.

[identity profile] happysteve.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
wow cool! enjoy your world hopping.

while there's usually crash space at the chai house, the "driving you around" part would most likely be limited to weekends only. just letting ya know.

[identity profile] mh75.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
congratulations. I hope this makes you happy. You should have said something last night - we would have bought you a drink.

a word of warning - before you decide to wait until June to look for a job, since you don't want one until June, why don't you talk to Cory about how his job search is going?

But, good luck, i hope you're new endeavors are wildly satisfying.

[identity profile] chirik.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Good for you. From the sounds of it, you needed to do this.

If you happen to make it down towards the Bay Area, I'd love to meet you. Can't offer crash space, though - too much stuff in too little room. :-/

I'll admit ... there are times I'd like to go to my manager and tell him I'm quitting. I don't know what I'd do after that, though.

Well, lemme know if you hit over here. Yay.

[identity profile] tithonium.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You should join us for Finn's before you go. This friday at 7? ::)

[identity profile] catamorphism.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Although I'm sure you know other people in the Bay Area, you're welcome to crash at my place (I have an extra bedroom, a futon, and all that good stuff). Driving around would depend on when I get my license ;-)

oh yeah, and what i meant to say --- please let us know if we can do anything.

Good for you Deanna!

I'm sorry that we never got to really meet or work togeather @ the 'zon. I've enjoyed reading your posts, and I wish you the best of luck.

Wow, this comes as a surprise to me. I thought you were happy with your job at Amazon? ... good luck!

Sounds like you've got some fun plans soon - I hope you have a great time. :)

[identity profile] theonlymegumegu.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Good luck w/ everything that follows ^_^ Have fun in Japan and see you at the con! ^_~

[identity profile] nickjong.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
:o( I'm sorry Amazon didn't work out for you.

In the meantime, you're always welcome to crash at my place in Austin. I even have a futon now. :o)

[identity profile] cdinwood.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Dad is definitely a fun person to stay with, Dee!

[identity profile] eiriene.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as this makes you happy, Deanna, and it sounds like it will, I think you've made the right choice. =) And it's wonderful that you're coming to Pittsburgh for Carnival! I'm almost definitely sure that Drew will be crashing on my couch, and Chris will be in that weekend too, so I'd love to see you. Dinner or lunch or something like that; hell, I'll cook, if people want. =)

And since you're going to Japan, can I ask you a small favor while you're there? There's a couple of PSOne games that I really, really want, and they're very expensive imported. So, I figured if you were going to go to a video game store during the course of your trip, maybe you could look around for them briefly? I'd give you money and everything beforehand, of course. =)

[identity profile] oren.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You have a place to crash in Southern California and rides to arcades and stuff on the weekend if you want.

[identity profile] kitanaor.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
You've got such a great head on your shoulders. I admire that you leave when its time to leave. Good luck out there. Does this mean you have time to stop over more often? ;)

[identity profile] the2belo.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You have a standing offer to give me a ring and shoot the {%`$&+ if you like while you're here. E-mail me for the number.

[identity profile] nykkel.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I got the impression she wanted to drop by and harrass you in person. :)

[identity profile] ohsochewy.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I quit my RFP-writing job about four months ago... and what do you know, I'm quitting my "new" law firm job any day now. (Having the boss yell at you for, oh, I don't know, doing things LEGALLY instead of the way he wants gets old.)

You and me, babe. Takin' on the world. If you are looking for some Japan tips, my family has been there three or four times. (My family... sans me.) Otherwise, you are welcome to visit beautiful-- and I'm not being sarcastic here--Madison, Wisconsin any time. Let us know beforehand, though, so we can clean feverishly. It'll be good for us. We're going to buy a new air mattress and everything, so you'll be very happy here! We live on the lake, and there are many fun things. So, as my mom says, "come on-ie!"

[identity profile] nykkel.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that the job where they couldn't manage to cover your paycheck? Or have I accidentally confused you with someone else who posts to Deanna's LiveJournal?

[identity profile] random-boy.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations, Deanna. This definitely sounds like the proper and healthy thing for you to do. Enjoy!

[identity profile] anukul.livejournal.com 2004-03-23 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm totally jealous -- if you can afford it, you should go on a see-all-30-ballparks-roadtrip.

It sounds like you needed to do this, so while I'm sorry that the job didn't work out, I'm happy that you were able to do something about it. And sometimes you just need a break -- enjoy it!
