lost in translation
Today...
We ate lunch in the cafe, and watched people playing basketball, dodgeball, and pickleball down in the court next to the parking lot. Doug broke his ankle playing dodgeball apparently, which is sad because he's like one of the nicest and smartest people in the company.
After work today I took the bus to the university district and got sushi at Sushi Express. I sat there and read the James book for an hour and ate sushi. It was cool. I liked walking up to the theater from the sushi place... it just sort of feels right to be walking through the university district, carrying a book, etc. I miss CMU.
Eli and I saw Lost In Translation. I would like to say that it was a good movie, because it was a good movie. However, I think I had a vastly different experience watching it than most of the room, because
1) i just came back from Tokyo so half of it was me going "oh SIGH, i was JUST there". i mean, they kept going through Shibuya, Ueno, Shinjuku, etc. At one point I'm even like "look there's Shinjuku Sportsworld! and the piano store I took a picture of!" And they were staying in some hotel in Shinjuku as well, I could tell from the view out the window.
2) I speak Japanese. This means that a lot of the times where there was supposed to be a comedic effect of a Japanese actor babbling at Bill Murray in Japanese without him having a clue of what they were saying (there's no subtitles) was totally lost on me, as of course, I *could* understand what they were saying, and just didn't think it was that funny.
3) infact, being as I know a fair amount about Japan culture, I just wasn't amused by a lot of the culture shock things they were playing on.
4) They had a scene in an arcade! There's someone playing the Doraemon song on Taiko no Tatsujin, and another guy freestyling on a Pop'n'Music machine, and another guy smoking and playing Guitar Freaks at the same time, and there's a ton of UFO catchers, and all I'm thinking is "HOLY SHIT. I WANT TO BE THERE," but the way it was portrayed was more of a "look at all the crazy Japanese people" and the audience was cracking up. sigh.
5) Bill Murray's character is endorsing Suntory. And as we all know, SUNTORY BOSS IS THE BOSS OF THEM ALL SINCE 1992.
Yeah, so I mean, it was a cute little "love" story of sorts as well, I think it was well-written and well-done, but... bleh. Now I want to go back and watch Tokyo Pop... especially since the main guy (the rock singer) from it was in Lost In Translation as well! he was the crazy director guy. how cool!

ryani is now in the Bilge Rats as well (the crew Farren's a senior officer in, and that DJ is in). I've been spending most of my time jobbing for them, since I always seem to miss my crew... I don't get it, my first few days they were always on late, now they're never on late. I wonder if I should just jump crews again? But I'll feel so dumb doing that. Anyway, we had a long long run and we won 50% of our fights, so we lost most of our money, which sucked. We got stuck with some CRAPPY jobbers that couldn't fight at all, which was just plain annoying, Liz even ended up planking one of them for repeatedly ignoring commands. Shrug. Was fun. The Rats have a new island that they're working on, which I guess is exciting.
