some things, mostly involving puzzles and pirates

Yo ho, yo ho, an insomniac's life for me...

Today was my dad's 60th birthday! And despite that I forgot to get him anything until last Thursday at which point I ordered him stuff from Amazon, he got the present today! Wow! Go Amazon :) I got him the Reduced Shakespeare Company's Compleat Works Abridged video 'cause I couldn't think of anything else offhand (he collects a rather esoteric selection of movie genres, to say the least, one of which is Shakespeare. I figured this wasn't in his normal spectrum of stuff, and I was right. When he called tonight he said it was very funny, very strange, and very Monty Python. He also said that apparently my brother ordered him something from Amazon too, a few days before I did, but he chose cheapo shipping, so I WIN.

My daddy is old though :( I worry about him sometimes.

Anyway, you don't really want to hear about that.
I'm not sure what you want to hear about though. I came home from work around 7:30, and got on Puzzle Pirates (yarrr, I be addicted, aye) and it was NEATO COOL because I found Farren, AND Nykkel, AND Carl, and DJ! AND we all got on a ship together and went pillaging! AND we had like, the most successful pillage run I have EVER been on... lots of superb swordfights, and foraging, and we made a crapload of money. My share was over 4000 PoE! So of course I went and blew my entire savings on a nice blue gown :) If the shops ever bother to finish working on my clothes, I will have my normal green outfit, a white and navy sailor suit, and a blue gown, in a day or two. But, that's not that important. What is important is that:

1) Farren's a great captain! It was awesome sailing with him. I ♥ Farren.
2) Carl got to experience the fun of jobbing for a random crew, and at least it was just our bunch of weirdoes :) Plus he got a really nice share of money to start him out for clothes and stuff.
3) I got to hang out with Carl, even if it wasn't for real. *sigh*
4) I got to crew with both Farren and Nykkel at once, and they are both super-competent at everything, which meant I was trying *really* hard to beat Nykkel at sailing, although I failed for the most part.
5) DJ got hooked up with Farren's crew, so he's got a real crew now! Whee!
6) I was a total moron and didn't understand the speaking scope :( So I accidentally was talking to the YHY while jobbing with Bilge Rats :( And MAN DID I FEEL STUPID. I hate when that happens. I really overreact about mis-tells... like this sort of chill goes down my back and I get really embarrassed. Even if I haven't said anything particularly juicy. I don't know why, I just hate that. It's like the equivalent of talking about someone and then finding out they're standing right behind you.

I did laundry while playing, kinda (I forgot to switch stuff once or twice, and totally forgot fabric softener, which wouldn't matter as the bottle was empty) and Eli got home and he was eating a sandwich and I didn't know what to eat 'cause we didn't grocery shop this weekend and I was dumb and so I said I'd go to the supermarket at a break point in the game. So I did. (Me: "Aye, I have to go sail out to Safeway to forage for some groceries..." DJ: "Who's bilging for you?" Me: "ARCO, I think.")

I went to the Ballard Safeway, and stopped in at Sunset Bowl to play one game of DDR. When I got there the rude guy who works at Seattle Center was playing and failing V Oni. He was like "Hey, I know you. Don't you play at Fun Forest?" And I was like "Uh what? Huh? I live in Seattle," thinking he meant the Tukwila Family Fun Center. "I've met you before. We played DDR together." And then I realized who he was. And I kinda half grinned half walked up to the machine to put in my quarters, and fortunately he went away. I played one game of DDR. I got 13 greats on White Lovers, 27 greats on Absolute, 13 greats on Spin the Disc, and around 70 and assorted noncombo on KCET as an extra stage. I guess I haven't *totally* lost my touch, but it sure feels like it. I should get the heck out of the house and go play DDR with people. I wonder if I should try to do that tomorrow instead of Puzzle Pirates. Or sometime, if I can ever get the car...

Anyway. I went grocery shopping. I don't really know how to grocery shop very well. I was definitely having one of my "utterly failing to be female" days already, and this just cemented it. At any rate, I bought groceries we needed, and some food, most of which was totally bad for me. Like hot dogs. I pulled a total Kevin and when I handed the cashier my Safeway card, the total went from $86 down to like $62 because I had picked out so many things based on the "hi you get a discount with your membr card!" basis.

I came home and ate dinner, and then I made the mistake of logging back in to Puzzle Pirates. I ended up jobbing with the Bilge Rats again because all of YHY was gone... so... now the Bilge Rats think I'm some crazy good fighter, because we got in a whole ton of fights and I was almost ALWAYS the last pirate standing, and even worse, I once single-handedly defeated two brigands (it was 3 of them on me after another crew member was eliminated, and I got one quickly, and then sat there fighting off 2). Everyone was all like "oh well, that sucked... wait... whoa... LOOK AT HER GO!" The captain, Greasy, was all like "Hey, uhh... can I steal you from yer crew? I'd make you a Pirate straight off the cuff..." I guess that's ironic, because my current crew wants to steal Nykkel away, and couldn't care less what I do :) ANYWAY, I do like a good fight, it's my favorite part of PP, so hopefully I can get in on some pillage runs with them again - I made over 5k total tonight with the Bilge Rats!

I hate myself. I need to sleep more. I'm turning into a hermit with this PP game :( I need to go make some plans to do things. Dammit, I need to go fabric shopping for a Halloween costume this weekend, I think... shame Tanya will be super-busy :( I wonder if I can find someone else to come with me... I find fabric stores fabulously boring when I'm alone.

I bet I'd really enjoy PP, but your example is proving a really good example why not to start playing it. Thank you for telling us so much about it, though, and letting us enjoy it vicariously even if not viciously!

Do you think PP actually has a chance of making it in the long-term of the MMORPG market simply because it's so different to everything else that's out there already?

Laurie took me to see the Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged) in NYC two years ago. It was a hilarious show. We sat in a balcony, and when they did the Romeo + Juliet part, we were evicted from our seats so they could do the balcony scene there. Very funny show! I liked the interpretive dance part the best. Or maybe the Hamlet Backwards part.

Other way around, I fear. 11pm-2am PT is 7am-10am British, assuming matching DST (true for 51 weeks of the year). My sleep pattern is currently sufficiently disreputable-to-Eastern that that's not really going to happen. :-)
