friday fives for the last month, hehe
1. Do you remember your first best friend? Who was it?
Barely. I went to this one elementary school for first grade and had a best friend there named Laurie. But then I switched schools in second grade.
2. Are you still in touch with this person?
We ended up at the same highschool. I haven't seen her since.
3. Do you have a current close friend?
I guess if I have a best friend now it's still Carl.
4. How did you become friends with this person?
Well, at the SCS picnic in the spring of 1997, I was talking to a bunch of people and Carl was sitting in the circle of people and I didn't really know who he was. For some reason he said "Oh, so YOU'RE Deanna Rubin," and I replied "Yeah, who the heck are you?" Then we ended up on opposing sides at Capture the Flag in the fall, and in Japanese class together in the spring, and gaming in the lounge... one night we were staying up late doing homework together and talking and something just clicked and the rest is history.
At least that's how I'd tell it. He'd probably be like "Yeah, so there was this freaky girl in my Japanese classes who kept stealing my hair ties and making me watch crap anime like Marmalade Boy. Eventually she stopped."
5. Is there a friend from your past that you wish you were still in contact with? Why?
I always kind of wish I knew what the heck Laura Handel and Mark Zettlemoyer are up to. They were two of my close friends in highschool and I've totally lost track of them. From college I really wish I could hang out with Matty-D and Erich and Mark again. There are a bazillion others but those kinda jump to mind.
Old Friday Fives:

1. What were your favorite childhood stories?
2. What books from your childhood would you like to share with [your] children?
I'm going to answer these together, and basically answer it as "some random books I read before I turned 13"
Homer Price, by Robert McCloskey
The Neverending Story, by Michael Ende
Fox in Socks, by Dr. Seuss
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by Roald Dahl
This Place Has No Atmosphere, by Paula Danziger
Encyclopedia Brown ..., by Donald Sobol
About the B'Nai Bagels, by E.L.Konigsburg
The Obnoxious Jerks, by Stephen Manes
A Semester in the Life of a Garbage Bag, by Gordan Korman
3. Have you re-read any of those childhood stories and been surprised by anything?
I am always struck by how awesome the Homer Price stories are, if that counts.
4. How old were you when you first learned to read?
Less than 3. No, seriously. I got my first library card before I actually knew how to write my name clearly. My mom says I was reading at an insanely early age - like she would read books to me and I would be speaking along with her and she realized that I was actually reading, not just repeating the words.
5. Do you remember the first 'grown-up' book you read? How old were you?
Hum, I guess that'd probly be Stranger in a Strange Land, when I was 13.

1. How are you planning to spend the summer [winter]?
Working. Going to Texas. Oh wait, I did already.
2. What was your first summer job?
Camp counselor, yo.
3. If you could go anywhere this summer [winter], where would you go?
Japan :(
4. What was your worst vacation ever?
When I was like 11 or so my mom took me and my brother to Ocean City, NJ for a week, without my dad. It was fun for about 2-3 days and then my mom started going nuts, at one point she actually abandoned me on the beach and drove uptown to get dinner with my brother. I have vaguely good memories of that trip only because I played a ton of mini golf and juggled for people on the boardwalk. The rest of it is a blur of my mother screaming at me and yelling at my dad on the phone and whatnot.
5. What was your best vacation ever?
Japan.

1. Is your hair naturally curly, wavy, or straight? Long or short?
Naturally straight and thin as a pin, but getting it permed twice in middle school made it somehow turn into being naturally thick and wavy.
2. How has your hair changed over your lifetime?
I've pretty much always worn it long except that one time of temporary insanity my sophomore year of college when I cut it all off and dyed it many colors. Other than that it's stayed the same.
3. How do your normally wear your hair?
Back in a ponytail or bun.
4. If you could change your hair this minute, what would it look like?
I was just pondering this earlier today, actually - I was thinking I'd get a punk haircut and dye it purple or something. Seriously.
5. Ever had a hair disaster? What happened?
Well, there was that time I was trying to make my hair blue... and had bleached it... so it was yellow... and well, yellow and blue make GREEN... and I showed up for 15-212 lecture with a head of sickly green hair and everyone was picking on me.
