Carnival, Day 3

I nearly overslept [profile] cdinwood's birthday lunch but didn't. Got there a little late, ended up 20 mins late overall after parking. On the way there I did a genuine Pittsburgh Left to get onto Walnut from Shady. Just pulled right out there in front of oncoming traffic. Go me! Anyway, got to Max&Erma's, gave Christina her bag full of cutesy Sanrio goodness, and sat at a table with Joey, [profile] kahare, [profile] nickjong, [profile] combinator, and [personal profile] jcreed. Ate a salad and had a traditional M&E Oreo milkshake, YUM. Was a good group and we had fun and there were bunches of people at the other table. Rawr.

Drove Jason, Martin and Nick to the CS Lounge BBQ in Schenley, around uh 2pm. There were a lot of people there and lots of meat there and since I'd eaten lunch already I didn't really eat any BBQ food, just stole a soda and some almost-melted-anyway ice cream. But I got to see a gazillion people. Scott and Shell, Vince and Becca, Adam and Rehana, [personal profile] sleepsong, [profile] charness, [personal profile] techstep (and his Colecovision shirt), Betsy and Rebecca the Freshmen, Mark Tomczak, [personal profile] whitemage, [profile] zml, Simon, Qarl, Rem, Erick, [profile] rmitz, [profile] allwein, [personal profile] chamois, [profile] dvarin, [profile] mj2q, [profile] shoebox_bird for a little while, Christina Simone, ugh, I'll add to this when I look at the pictures. We took several group pictures, which is cool because I'll have new lounge family shots. Including the "Iain Keddie 14-inch" memorial shot. For the most part we just sat around talking to people, nobody whipped out cards or games or anything because it was too windy. And we made jokes about parallel algorithms for grilling optimizations. OH AND THE BEST WAS TOMCZAK'S TROGDOR PARODY HE SANG FOR ME! ("FUNCTOR!!!!!! Instantiating the modules, Instantiating the data types... FUNCTOR!!!!!" Yeah, we are a bunch of fucking nerds. Your point?) After an hour or three we decided to leave.

Nick and Carl and I went back to campus, I put my car near Wean and we... err. Let's see, first we stopped in the UC so I could look at the Medieval Madness machine, and we would have gone to the school store but it was closed. No more 1337 CMU g34r for me, I guess. We ran into Mike The Freshman #1 (well, he's now a sophomore but that's another story) and then we decided we'd go see the SNS show later and then we went to Midway, where we found the funnel cake lines to be too long BUT I got to go into the KGB booth and finally give a long overdue great big hug to [profile] teki. We also met up with Erick but then proceeded to lose him. And we kind of found [profile] ryani and Carisa but I was on a weird tangent so I lost them too. Whoops. Then we went back to the lounge again.

Spent a lethargic hour or so in the lounge... some people played cards and stuff and I kind of just sat there on the couch watching people. Styger has a TON of hair, she does. I skipped CS volleyball because I wasn't really dressed for it and I also skipped doing DDR with anyone for the same reason pretty much. So I guess I didn't really get to see Justin this visit :( Nick and Carl and I walked through the basements of Doherty to get up to the lounge though and MAN is that building weird now, they've redone so much of it that it's totally unfamiliar and weird to me now.

Rawr, after an hour in the lounge we went to see Into the Woods, it was me and Nick and Carl and Sheena (and [profile] fleaplus ended up sitting across the aisle from us, and we also saw Ryan and Carisa there, and Stephen and Ruth Morrisson as well). Anyway, the show... so the Baker and his wife could actually sing and act. Cinderella could sing but not act, and Jack could neither sing nor act, and Riding Hood was mediocre but I think she might have just had a lack of good directing. The witch was mediocre too. The princes were probably the highlight of the show; before the first "Agony" song I muttered "oh god, please don't let them ruin this song" but then they totally nailed it, which was cool. There were a LOT of sound issues, like we could barely hear a lot of the dialogue and lyrics because so few people seemed to have working body mics. Anyway, I guess the highlights of the show were for me the Baker/Baker's Wife songs, really, and a few assorted other random things. If I didn't already know the entire show by heart, though, and wasn't with Nick who hadn't seen it at all, I probly would have walked out fairly early. I wonder what was up with the microphones, really... but I didn't know the people on sound to go ask. (Seriously, don't get me wrong, I used to be in Scotch'n'Soda, I was even a stage manager for a spring carnival show, I kind of knew what to expect. Heck, I even saw Into the Woods last time they did it, in the Drill Deck, in spring 1995... I guess the other thing is that I've been to every single SNS Carnival show in my tenure at CMU except for Chess in spring 1996. Why break tradition?)

After the show we went to the Beeler house, where we walked in on the middle of a 16-board swiss teams game or something that the guys were holding. People were going for food at 11pm so Carl and I went for a walk around random Beeler streets for a half hour or so. It was good to talk to him, though right as we were actually getting into some interesting conversation, we ran into the one and only Marcin Krieger, who apparently is now still working for Microsoft but is now in some weird east coast collegiate marketing position. Weird. So he talked to us for a while and we also ran into [personal profile] jcreed on his way home and talked to him too, and eventually Nick came outside and got us and said "We're going now now now."

We went to India Garden... I drove one car and Charlie drove the other. They found a space quickly and we took forever to find one (eventually I parked illegally, then we found a space on our way there, so Carl and Matt stood in it for me while I got the car. Matt commented later "I wonder what people thought as they looked for spaces... 'driveway... driveway... fire hydrant... driveway... two guys standing there... driveway...'?") and we went in and ordered a ton of indian food. Yum! It was Christina, her friend Kristen, Charlie, Carl, Sheena, Matt, me, Nick, and Drew. We had good food and it was fun! I ate way too much, but that's ok. After dinner I dropped Carl off and went back to the Beeler house, where more games happened. Adam and Matt and Drew played Puerto Rico, and Nick and I played bridge with Noble and Charlie (and Jen subbed in for Charlie later, and Kevin came over to play bridge with the other three guys). It was fun but I was totally mentally shot AND Noble and Charlie were playing some weird-ass "Recursive Diamond" system. So around 3am I gave up and came back here to Forest Hills. Well, more like I gave up at 3am and got back here around 4 and... yeah. Hiyo. I feel so hugged :)

Gotta get up in the morning for Sunday lunch, or something. 'Night all. I'll see if we can stop by the Jensens' tomorrow before going to the airport, but aside from Sunday lunch I'm pretty much out of commission for the rest of the trip. Then we fly back with Drew and Matt, and then... back to life, back to reality.

[profile] alternakittyn, [profile] arashink, [profile] sorakirei, [profile] ryani, etc - I'm really sorry I didn't work out plans to see you guys more, but bleh, I just didn't think DDRing was a good idea today, and the day just had such weird timing, especially what with us deciding to drop three hours on the Into the Woods show... and me wanting to spend as much of the day as possible with Nick and Carl. I really did want to do Para with you, Carolee! Hopefully you can visit Seattle someday?

I was hoping you hadn't managed to show up last night and found us not there! Marmar, Beyani, Chris, Jenny, Dave, Isaac and I all went to Dave and Buster's and Eat n Park last night. I kept my cell handy, but I figured you were really busy. It's all cool. We'll be back next year, we're thinking, so we'll make better plans then.

lucky!

Into the Woods! I still haven't gotten to see that in person.
