groovy shopping and movie swapping

Eli decided to go with some of our friends to see a movie this afternoon, but I was counting on running errands today, so I went anyway. I took the 61B out to Edgewood and went to K-mart.

I love K-mart except for the "I can spend several hundred dollars on a cartful of crap because I forget that even though one item may be cheap at 5 bucks, twenty of those items makes a hundred bucks, and that isn't so cheap" factor. Ok, I'm exaggerating. I actually made a list of things I was getting before I went, and I managed to hit each thing on the list (including getting a Power Puff Girls plastic purse to use as a new dice bag since my last one got ruined when sunscreen exploded in my bag. I also got a new bag - not a backpack but one of those shoulder bags; I'm going to try it out and see how it works, it was pretty cheap relatively). Most of my items were things like socks and underwear and jeans to replace my old ones (I have to figure out what to do with the jeans I'm retiring. I also made a point of getting smaller-sized jeans than normal. Not to speak in numbers, but for a while I was wearing jeans size N, where N is a number I don't care to admit. Well, when I had strep throat two years ago I lost 15 pounds and found that I fit much better into N-2, so I bought a pair of jeans size N-2. Then I got a little fatter and had to wear N again. Well, now I seem to be somewhere between the two. So I am going to wear the N-2 jeans more than the N ones - and any time I feel like they're tight, it will remind me to eat less and exercise more. Inspiration, I hope).

Anyway, I spent like 3 hours at K-mart. Basically, when I'm with someone else I go through the place pretty quickly, but when I'm by myself and it's my only stop, I can take a while. I looked through a lot of random clothing, basically. I really should have bought either some of the men's sweaters I found since they were cool, or maybe some women's clothes that are normal, because I keep thinking how I don't really have anything that could be considered business casual. But, I dunno. I don't like the styles of women's clothing, they don't fit me very well.

It was kinda hellish getting back, actually. It was around 6pm, it was dark out already, and since I had gotten off the 61B at a point I don't usually, I decided to go back there to get the return bus, but then I couldn't figure out where the right stop was, and it was dark, and not very well-lit around there, and a lot of people kept coming by and I was kind of scared, being all alone with a ton of K-mart bags. It was ok though, after like ten minutes the bus showed up and I got back home okay.

So after that, Nick came over for movie-swapping. I made dinner of tortellini and tortelloni for him and me and Eli, and then Nick and I watched Singin' in the Rain first, which is my favorite movie ever, that he hadn't seen. I know way too much trivia about the movie, but I mostly kept quiet. He enjoyed it, I think. Then we watched the Shawshank Redemption, which is Nick's favorite movie, that I hadn't seen before. I think we did the movies in the wrong order, since Singin' in the Rain is so happy and Shawshank was so depressing in some ways... but I do admit that despite the ickiness of the people-getting-beat-up and shot and all scenes in Shawshank, it was a really interesting story, and the movie certainly warrants all of the praise it's gotten. It was also really long. I don't know if I'd watch it again voluntarily but I certainly wouldn't object to seeing it again. I think it sort of needs to sink in with me. I won't say more about what I thought incase there are more people reading this who haven't seen it that it would ruin it for. And dang, you know, I've seen a ton of Tim Robbins movies and it always astounds me how each time he plays someone completely and utterly different and pulls it off. That is pretty cool.

So anyway, it's late now. Oh, did I mention I picked up Simcity 3000 at K-mart as well? Poor Eli. Actually, he is in luck, because I can't figure out how the game works yet, what with things you need to build or don't need to build, etc. I'm sure I'll catch on eventually though. Mmmmmm, games.

shopping and mens' sweaters

I love being able to shop at my own pace. Going shopping with people is fun, but going by yourself can also be really fun.

I often buy mens' sweaters. Often, I find that they have more sane colors and patterns than womens'. That's probably because "flowers" is not a pattern sweaters should have, IMO. The biggest problem with buying mens' is getting them large enough to leave room for boobs, yet small enough such that the arms aren't obscenely long. I'm fortunate to have fairly broad shoulders for a woman, so those two requirements are relatively easy to satisfy.

I need to watch Singin in the Rain again. Maybe I'll make Willie watch it with me. :)
