answers to ddr cryptic 2
Oh, geez, I forgot to post the second list of cryptic answers.
1) Sweets hidden inside American dynamite. -- Candy
Straight: Candy are sweets.
"Hidden inside" implies a hidden word in the sentence... ameriCAN DYnamite was pointed out.
2) He approaches his fiancee after considering the odds. -- Face
Straight: "Approaches" is another way of saying faces, like to face the facts, or face a person.
"Considering the odds" was one I took from the Cryptic page... so if you consider the odd letters (1st,3rd,5th,7th) of "fiancee", you do indeed get Face.
3) The ultimate variety is blue oats. -- Absolute
Straight: "Ultimate" is another word for absolute.
"Variety" implies a scramble, and blue oats is indeed an angram for Absolute.
4) Naoki's genius precedes a British band going back. -- Brilliant 2U
Straight: Naoki.
A genius is brilliant, and U2 is a british band; going backwards makes them 2U. Brilliant precedes 2U.
5) A long period of time hears a baseball dropped. -- Era
Straight: Long period of time is an era.
"Hears" implies the soundalike, and baseball dropped is error, which sounds like era.
6) Cloud kill. -- Smoke
No straight on this one; it's a double meaning. Smoke puffs up in clouds, and smoke is also slang to kill someone. And Cloudkill is a 5th level spell and Smoke is 5 feet on Trick Double... no, just kidding about that last part. :)
7) A catastrophically weird rare train phobia. -- Paranoia Rebirth
Straight: Catastrophic; PR is a cata.
"weird" implies scramble. I thought it was just way too cool that "paranoia rebirth" could be scrambled into "rare train phobia"...
8) A touch unmasks life elsewhere. -- I Feel
Straight: Touch... feel... yeah.
"unmasks" was supposed to be another "hidden within" significator. lIFE ELsewhere.
9) In heaven one hand points fingers at planets. -- .59
Straight: Heaven. Yeah, another .59 tengoku reference.
This was sort of a charades one. "Points" is ., one hand's fingers is 5, and there are 9 planets. Ok, maybe that's pushing it.
10) We desire a lower jaw inside a mixed-up primate. -- Trip Machine
Straight: Desire, the band that did the original TM.
"mixed up" implies a scramble again. lower jaw is "chin"... if you unscramble "primate" and put "chin" in, you get "trip machine".
