Packed and moving!
So yeah, after a 4-day workweek in San Francisco I came back to Seattle to get my stuff and move it down there.
Though I only had like 85-90% of my packing done at that point, I got a little more done last night.
This morning we went to rent a UHaul. Oddly, there were two places within a quarter-mile of each other that rent UHauls -- we went to the first one by accident and almost took some other lady's truck that was going to Idaho. It was at a weird sketchy car repair place... the one for us was at a nice little mailboxes place where they even had cookies :)
We ran the Prius back home, then went to IKEA to get me a bed (figured it'd be better to do that this morning with the truck than in CA after we spend a day unloading the truck, you know?) The one I picked out was not marked as sold out, but, get this, that morning they sold their last unit of it :( It's a Brimnes daybed, meaning that most of the time it's a twin but it can roll out a second bed segment if needed. So... the guy's like "We'll get more in on Sunday, from California!" and I'm like "Gee, think I could GET one on Sunday in California?" We looked at inventory and the Palo Alto IKEA has 22 of them and Emeryville has 6, so, eh. We did buy mattresses and stuff besides that, so if worse comes to worst I'll just sleep on mattresses with no bed for a bit.
Met up with George at Blazing Bagels. I had intended to buy her lunch but the timing was off, oops. Either way, she was happy to get good bagels that actually do sandwiches. We came back here to the house and then started loading all my crap onto the UHaul. Well, more like, I helped move a lot of boxes out at first, and some of the other stuff, and I carried a desk and some shelves and whatnot, but in the end I ended up trying frantically to finish packing more stuff to go, and clearing out stuff that had to go, and so I'd say Mike and George did a lot lot lot of work getting the truck loaded up. George insisted that I don't have that much stuff relatively though. I gave her some puzzles (one that I'd been saving for her) but feel like I still owe her a big favor anyway for this.
She left around 4 and I went back to packing a few more things, and then around 6-6:30 Mike and I went to the west side, ostensibly for his holiday party, but with a few stops first. We went to Best Buy in Bellevue to acquire something capable of playing music in the car since we have a long drive and the truck has nothing but radio. I also acquired a "TV" by which I really mean "monitor", since that's my main intention for it but I can also plug my Japanese DVD player into it so that'll be nice. (also astounded that you can get a 24" flat-screen TV for under $200.)
Then we went to get dinner with Carl. And we went to Chinook's and they actually had sole! I was pretty happy, and Carl could order salmon cakes since I wasn't. The 3 of us split a dessert called "Kris Kringle's Favorite" or something like that, it was some brownies with candy cane peppermint ice cream, which was quite good.
Then it was around 9:30-10ish. Mike and I tried to go to his company party, the IEB bash at the Experience Music Project, but there was a HUGE LINE to get in, even for all of us with wristbands and whatever. We were NOT expecting that. Also it turned out that by then we missed Blues Traveller, which he was looking forward to. The line was crazy and it was unclear how exactly people were getting in -- my theory was they were at capacity for the building and were letting people in as other people left? I dunno, but after 30 minutes standing there in the cold, we gave up and came home.
I'm now more like 99% packed :)
Tomorrow morning we'll load the last final things into the truck and then we'll hit the road towards SF. I think Mike reserved us a motel room in Redding, CA, so that's where we should be spending tomorrow night. Crazy...!
