Weekend...

Short one, only two days back in Seattle.

Saturday it was really lovely weather out, so Mike and I walked to the shopping center so I could go cash my first paycheck (exciting!). We had lunch at Quizno's, and ate outdoors. It was, infact, so warm outside that I wore capris and a short-sleeve shirt and was warm -- maybe almost near 80 degrees F.

Spent the afternoon at home working on my computer and on some puzzle hunt stuff, while running laundry, though. It was annoying because the machine must have shorted out or something, it sat there with water for an hour and didn't run, but we didn't find out that for a while, and wasted a lot of time. Sigh.

In the evening we headed to Django's place for a barbecue... we were a little later than the others so got the second round of burgers and hot dogs. It was still good, it's been a very long time since I've been at a BBQ, I think! Most of our Hero group was there, plus Tony, minus Ballard folks. We had 8 people but decided to play a 7-player Seven Wonders game. Django took Lu home, and Mike and I went outside to play catch for a bit.

We played two games with 7 people. It's a really different dynamic in that there are more duplicates of cards so you don't freak out quite as much about letting one go by, but there are a lot of people and so resources can easily get denied to you if you aren't careful and don't plan ahead. I was pretty lucky in that I was never SIGNIFICANTLY blocked but I did have a few things I couldn't build. I noticed that chaining is a LOT more important in a big game -- you're so much less likely to have the resources to build the thing you want to upgrade to. On the other hand, you also have no clue what the people across the table from you are doing -- it's much more concerning to try to stay up with your neighbors, which makes you wonder, why are we playing 7 people? My first game I sat between Tony and Django, and it was a fairly close game all around. Second game we shifted people around a little and I was between Nicole and Mike, and I was Olympia B (I think? Whichever is the power that your first monument gives you a trading post, your 2nd gives you 5 points, and your 3rd emulates a neighbor's purple card). Anyway, this time I went Blue for the most part, and also managed to get enough military to get significant points off of it without too much effort, and also had decent gold card points... basically, I had everything but science points, very well balanced, and came out in the lead with 60 points total. I think the gold cards and blue cards work pretty well in a huge game like that.

We headed home after that, it was like 10pm. There was a call to play Power Grid, but... Power Grid is seriously a good game that I just don't particularly enjoy playing. I dunno. More like, I don't like it in big numbers. I guess 3-4 players is ok. On the other hand, it was late. It did raise a discussion of "Good games that I don't like" as well as "Crappy games that I love".

Hmmm, Sunday. We didn't wake up super-early to see X-Men with the group. Mike'll probably see it this week and I probably won't at all, unless it's so good that he wants to see it twice. Instead, anyway, we walked to the shopping center, and went to the Sammamish Cafe, which we saw being built a few weeks back but weren't sure when it would open. Turns out it's been open for a while -- it's only open 6am-3pm! For breakfast/brunch/lunch. I had an open-face meatloaf sandwich that was quite good, Mike had some french toast breakfast combo. Good stuff.

I spent the afternoon working on a puzzle. That's all I'll say about that. I also goofed off on PP a bit since the weekends seem to be the only time I really can do that.

We eventually went to dinner at Red Robin, and then watched The Muppet Movie in the evening, on VHS because that's the only format we had. We thought about going to X-Men, but the timing just didn't work. Oops.

Now I'm back here in San Francisco...
