DC->Philly

Okay, now I'm at my uncle's house in Philly (well, the suburbs).

I slept in today, really late, actually. Well, I woke up and fell back asleep several times, but opted not to get out of bed until past 1pm. I had a pretty sore throat overnight, kept waking up because my throat hurt, so I'd drink water, and then I'd also get up because I had to go to the bathroom, and eventually around 10am took some Tylenol so the throat would stop hurting, and went back to sleep. It was cold, and I saw snow outside, and figured I probably shouldn't go into DC and walk around in that condition anyway.

And then my brother came home because apparently his office was closed as a snow day. He went out to run some errands and I slept more.

Eventually I did wake up, when my brother got back, and just spent a few hours talking to him rather than going into the city. I guess that worked out okay, he'd even brought back some bagels for lunch, so I had them and orange juice. Finally in the late afternoon he was like "I can give you a ride to the train station if you leave around the same time I go to pick up Emily from work, so you should probably get ready..." so I went and showered and changed and packed up my stuff and all and we were out the door by 4:30. Oddly, when the Tylenol wore off, my throat didn't feel TOO terrible, but I still appreciated the ride, walking a mile in the cold with all my stuff would have kind of sucked.

I had a vague aim for the 6:10 train but knew it might not happen since I wanted to get dinner at Fuddrucker's. I took the Metro to the Gallery/Chinatown stop, and I guess my train fu is still really strong even in the US, because, despite not actually knowing for sure which way the Fudd's was going to be from the train station, I guessed on an exit and got up to the street and there it was, right there. Whee! I had a 1/3 pound burger and could pile tons of lettuce on it and mayo, and put cheese and BBQ sauce on fries, and that made me happy! Though eating alone did not make me happy, because, I dunno, I felt paranoid about leaving my stuff at the table when I went up to get things, etc. Probably shouldn't have been.

And well, I was done eating around 5:45ish, so I decided to take a shot at getting that 6:10 train after all. Went back to the Metro station, and after a brief snafu on which way to take the Red Line, ended up on the right side, and took it two stops to Union Station, and the escalators all don't work but I got to Amtrak. I saw it was 6:03pm and the train was leaving at 6:10 and a 6:05 train already had "doors closed", but I went up to the kiosks to buy tickets and was able to get a ticket for the 6:10 train after all! Went to the platform, the guy said there were plenty of seats towards the front of the train, so I ran up to the 2nd or 3rd car, and was in a seat at 6:08.

What I had failed to notice was that I was in the "Quiet Car", though, and when I called my uncle to tell him what time I'd get in, some guy came over like "Hey, this is the QUIET CAR, stop talking on your damn cellphone", and I'm like "...whoops." I wonder how much people actually respect that kind of thing? It'd be neat if they did. The car was pretty quiet the entire time I was riding, which was about 2 hours, and I fell asleep again for a while.

Got to 30th street and had about a 30-minute wait for the R6, which is no longer the R6 but actually the "Norristown Line". Whatever. A lot of signs still say R1, R6, whatever, but the official names no longer have those numbers with them. I went into the little mini-mart that's between Septa and Amtrak (have I mentioned recently that the remodelling they did of that part of 30th Street is rather nice?) and got some TASTYKAKES!!!!! Woooo. So I ate butterscotch Krimpets and checked email, and got on the train at 8:36, and got out to Spring Mill about 35 minutes later, and my uncle picked me up at the station.

Then I just hung out talking to my uncle and aunt until they went to sleep at 11pm or so.

But I'm still sleep-shifted and on west coast time, so I'm still awake. Going to sleep shortly though. I have no plan tomorrow at all, so thinking to go into the city and wander around since it's supposed to be the only sunny day this week. We'll see though.
