Wednesday night at Erika

So yesterday morning I got emails from Michael Westbay (japanesebaseball.com) and Patrick Newman (npbtracker.com) saying that they were getting together in the evening, since Patrick is on a whirlwind week in Japan visiting family. The idea was to meet up at the Tokyo Dome around 6pm and see the Giants-Baystars game if there were tickets, and if not, to do something else.

Well, the game sold out (duh), so my alternate suggestion was to go to Yakiniku Erika for dinner, since Westbay has still never been there, and we like yakiniku, and I thought it'd be an interesting thing for Patrick to see while he is here, even though he isn't particularly a Fighters fan (he's a Tigers fan if anything, I think, from when he lived in Kansai).

So we did.

And when we walked in I was like "3 people... no, no reservation, sorry...", and the waitress (can't remember if she's actually one of Hichori's sisters or just a family friend), was like "Hey, I know you, we see you on TV all the time!" and tagged Hichori's dad, who was like "Oh, it's the girl we always see cheering like crazy on TV! Welcome!"

Westbay and Patrick were amused.

We got put in the back of the place because we had no reservation, which meant it was hard to see the TV, but whatever... we had yakiniku, watched the Fighters game (they lost 3-1 to Rakuten, sigh), and talked baseball for like 3 hours. I got yelled at again for forgetting to wear slippers to the bathroom (just one of those Japanese things I never remember about).

On our way out we chatted with the Morimotos a bit, them asking about Westbay's Baystars hat and where Patrick was from, and saying how we all speak Japanese so well... and Patrick had been talking about Yuji Yoshioka so I'm like "You gotta see this photo", and they have one of some Teikyo alumni at an assembly there, including Shibakusa, Hichori, Yoshioka, Narahara, Misawa, and I forget who the other guy is. And we looked around at the photos some, and I asked Hichori's mom if they had any Teikyo stuff with Takaaki Matsumoto, since he is also from Arakawa and Teikyo and all, and they said no, but did I know about his parents' restaurant? And I said "Yeah! I'm a teacher at Arakawa 7-chu, so we're like 3 minutes away from there!" And she's all like "You teach at 7-chu? Really? Wow, I see..." as if it was a big revelation. I dunno. I told her that my students always wonder why the hell I'm a Fighters fan but that they all think Hichori is cool because he's from Arakawa.

Shrug.

And then we went home. I forgot to take a photo of us there, so there isn't one. Whoops.

I still have to admit that my life is very bizarre in that I can go to a restaurant run by the parents of my favorite Fighters outfielder, and THEY'RE the ones saying, "Hey, we see you on TV all the time!"

Today is now Thursday, a national holiday for the autumn equinox. BUT, unfortunately, it is pouring rain, so all of the college games got rained out today, and minor league, and indie league, so there is no baseball that I could attend except Eagles vs. Lions at the Seibu Dome, and I seriously have absolutely very little interest in that. Chunichi vs. Hanshin (in the Nagoya Dome) should be on BS1 at 3pm.
